MacDonald, 66, served as head baseball coach of the Huskies from 1977 to 1992 where he compiled a record of 422-322-7. He was a five-time Pac-10 Northern Division Coach of the Year (1979-1981, 1985, 1990 and 1992). In 1994, MacDonald was hired on as the head coach at Navy where he was 178-152-3 in seven seasons.
In 23 seasons, MacDonald's teams won six league titles and earned four NCAA Tournament berths. MacDonald excelled in football and baseball at Queen Anne High School in Seattle where he graduated in 1960. He went on to play baseball at the University of Washington. After graduation, MacDonald became a teacher and coached baseball at Cleveland High School in Seattle for seven years. After the 1973 season he joined the staff of Washington State Head Coach Bo Bo Brayton where he remained until accepting the head job at Washington.
Since his retirement from college coaching in 2000, MacDonald, who lives in Port Orchard, WA, has remained involved in baseball at the semipro and high school levels. He serves on the advisory board of the West Coast League and has been a batting practice pitcher for the Seattle Mariners.
